Los Altos

Los Altos

Orchards turned into one of the Peninsula's most desirable addresses.

Los Altos real estate sits at the quiet center of everything that makes the Peninsula one of the most sought-after places to live in the country. Jessica Nemire is based at the Christie’s International Real Estate Sereno office on First Street, in the heart of downtown Los Altos — so the city isn’t just a market on a map for her. It’s the community she walks through every working day.

Once a sea of apricot and walnut orchards, Los Altos has grown into a community of roughly 31,000 residents spread across lush, tree-lined streets. The city’s character is shaped by three things: a thriving and walkable downtown, nationally ranked schools, and a relaxed, family-first rhythm that sets it apart from its flashier Silicon Valley neighbors.

Downtown Los Altos & the Triangle

The First Street and Main Street retail corridor is the city’s living room. The Los Altos History Museum, Packard Foundation headquarters, boutique retail, and weekly farmers market give downtown a village feel that’s rare in the South Bay. Walk ten minutes in any direction and you’re among ranch and Craftsman homes on streets canopied by mature trees.

Architectural Character

Los Altos homes span several distinct eras. The oldest properties near Adobe Creek are turn-of-the-century Craftsman and Spanish Colonial. Post-war neighborhoods built through the 1950s and 60s gave the city its signature ranch homes, often on large, flat lots. More recent teardown-rebuilds by SummerHill Homes, De Mattei Construction, and Balcon Homes have introduced contemporary farmhouse and modern Mediterranean architecture. Eichler-influenced designs are scattered throughout — though true Eichlers are more concentrated in neighboring Mountain View.

Schools That Drive the Market

Family buyers come to Los Altos for the Los Altos School District (elementary and middle) and the Mountain View–Los Altos Union High School District, consistently among California’s highest-performing districts. Los Altos High School and Gardner Bullis Elementary (serving parts of south Los Altos) are perennial draws. School-zone boundaries materially affect value — a block can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Lifestyle & Amenities

Golf at Los Altos Golf & Country Club, healthcare at El Camino Hospital, and classes at nearby Foothill College anchor daily life. Rancho Shopping Center serves the south end of the city, and the proximity to I-280, Foothill Expressway, and San Antonio Road means commutes to Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Sand Hill Road, and the San Francisco Peninsula are genuinely manageable by Silicon Valley standards.

The Los Altos Market Today

Single-family home prices typically range from roughly $2.8M to $10M+, with premium pockets — North Los Altos near the Country Club, lots bordering Los Altos Hills, and the newest modern builds — reaching higher. Inventory is tight; turnover is low because owners tend to stay for decades.

Whether you’re looking at a 1950s ranch on the Triangle or a brand-new contemporary off Fremont Avenue, Jessica can walk you through the blocks, the schools, and the comps in a way only someone who works from this downtown every day can.
